Do your students fall asleep in class? Why is this so? One of the reasons might be – however dreadful the word may sound to us – that they are utterly bored and not involved or challenged enough. Unlike adults, who are used to receiving information in the form of text on paper, young people are likely to use other sources. Teenagers are ‘screenagers’ who absorb a lot of information from visual stimuli. As a result, when presented with a textbook or a worksheet, they are often bored and disengaged. In this session, we will have a look at what student-centred learning is about and how to ensure our lessons keep our teenage students busy from lead-in to the feedback stages to maximize their engagement and increase their motivation. In the second part of the workshop, we will look at speaking and writing activities to engage teenagers preparing for a B1 level certification (eg Preliminary for Schools). Activities that you will be able to take away and use in your classes to get your students talking fluently and producing written work so that they can go on more quickly to get a B2 certificate with improved writing skills.
